You select 12A — window, nicely positioned towards the front, good legroom according to the seatmap. The booking page shows a clean row with nothing unusual. Then you board the aircraft and discover that 12A is directly behind the emergency exit door, which means a bare fuselage wall where the window should be, armrests that don't lift, and the seat in front fully reclined before the wheels have left the ground.
The gap between what an airline's booking seatmap communicates and what the seat is actually like is one of the most consistently frustrating parts of flying economy. Airlines have limited commercial incentive to fix it. But third-party tools and a few known patterns make it easy enough to avoid the worst surprises — if you know what to look for before you click “confirm seat.”
Seat pitch: the number airlines hide
Seat pitch — the distance from a fixed point on one row to the same point on the row in front — is the single most important variable for comfort in economy class. It is rarely shown during the seat-selection step of a booking, and when it is, it tends to appear in a small-print specifications page rather than alongside the price.
The range across major carriers in 2026 is wider than most passengers realise:
- Ultra-low-cost carriers (Ryanair, Spirit, Wizz Air, Frontier): 29–30 inches on most configurations.
- Short-haul legacy carriers (British Airways, Lufthansa intra-Europe, Air France domestic): 30–31 inches.
- Standard long-haul economy (most major widebody operators): 31–32 inches.
- Better-configured long-haul economy (Air New Zealand Pacific Economy, certain BA World Traveller rows): 33–34 inches.
- Premium economy: 36–38 inches.
An inch sounds immaterial. In practice, the difference between 29 and 31 inches is the difference between fitting your knees in without touching the seat back and not — and that calculus changes entirely depending on your height. Most passengers over 6ft will find anything under 31 inches uncomfortable on a flight longer than two hours. Under 5'8”, the extra inch barely registers.
Seat pitch by aircraft type is published on third-party seatmap sites — SeatGuru and Aerolopa both list it, keyed to the specific aircraft variant. It is almost never shown during the booking flow itself. If you want to know before you pay, you have to go and look it up separately.
Recline: the button that doesn't always work
Seat recline has been contentious enough that several airlines have responded by removing it on some aircraft entirely. Ryanair's slim-line seats don't recline. Some Spirit configurations are fixed. A growing number of Airbus A320 family aircraft operated by budget carriers use locked slim-line seats as standard — saving two to three centimetres per seat and therefore fitting in another row.
On aircraft that do recline, certain rows are structurally prevented from doing so:
- The last row of any cabin — the seat back hits the rear bulkhead, galley wall, or toilet partition. The seat physically cannot recline, or reclines about three centimetres before stopping.
- The row immediately in front of an emergency exit — recline would obstruct the exit path, so these seats are locked upright.
- The row directly in front of a rear galley — on some configurations this row is also limited, depending on how close the galley wall sits.
The last-row problem is the most common trap. These seats are often shown identically to all other rows in the airline's own seatmap. The passenger in the row in front, however, can fully recline — so you end up with no recline of your own and someone else's headrest 18 inches from your face. For a short daytime flight this is survivable. For a long-haul overnight, it is genuinely uncomfortable.
Exit-row seats add another constraint: you cannot place anything on the floor during taxi, takeoff, and landing — no bag tucked under the seat in front, because exit rows have no seat in front. Everything goes in the overhead bin. Armrests in exit rows are also commonly fixed in the raised position to allow rapid egress, so you cannot lift them to share the space with an empty middle seat.
Missing windows — and the seats in between
On narrow-body aircraft — the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families — window positions are fixed by the airframe. They are spaced according to structural requirements, not the seat layout. When an airline squeezes in an extra row or repositions a bulkhead, the seats and windows stop aligning perfectly.
The result is window seats that have no window, or where the window falls half-behind the seat frame rather than squarely beside the passenger. This happens most often:
- At rows adjacent to wing-mounted emergency exits, where structural frames are thicker and windows are sometimes omitted entirely.
- Near the wing root, where the structural ribs are closest together.
- At the very front and rear rows of a cabin — first and last rows are often close to a bulkhead that sits between two windows.
Airlines do not mark windowless seats in their own booking seatmaps. SeatGuru and Aerolopa both annotate known windowless seats — SeatGuru with a small grey indicator in the seat legend, Aerolopa with seat-level notes. If a window view matters to you (particularly for a child, or for a long over-water crossing), checking a third-party seatmap before you select is the only way to know.
Seats that look good on the map but aren't
Bulkhead rows
The first row of a cabin — directly behind a solid wall — looks ideal: no seat in front, so nobody can recline onto you, and a perception of extra space. The reality has some important catches. The tray table, entertainment screen, and armrests are all built into the fixed armrests rather than the seat back, which means the armrests cannot be lifted. You lose the ability to nudge them up when the middle seat is empty.
There is also no underseat storage at bulkhead rows. Your personal item goes in the overhead bin and stays there for the flight. And on most widebody aircraft, bulkhead rows double as bassinets rows — the wall in front has fold-out brackets for infant bassinets. If the airline has assigned an infant to that row, you will share the experience. Airlines do not disclose bassinet assignments on the public seatmap.
Exit rows
Exit rows offer genuine legroom — typically four to six inches more than a standard row — and that is a real benefit on a day flight. The constraints (no floor storage during takeoff and landing, fixed armrests, no recline on the exit row itself) are more of a trade-off on an overnight service where sleep is the goal. If you select an exit row for a long-haul red-eye because of the legroom, know that you will not be able to recline, and that the fixed armrests make lying sideways across an empty row much harder.
Over-wing seats
Seats positioned directly over the wing are the most stable in turbulence, sitting close to the aircraft's centre of lift. If you find turbulence genuinely distressing, this is the right part of the cabin. The trade-off is the view: you are looking directly at an engine nacelle and a wing surface rather than the landscape below. It is also worth noting that these rows tend to be among the noisier positions on a narrowbody, as the engine is directly beneath.
Where the noise is
Economy cabins have three consistent noise zones. The engine zone runs from roughly the wing-root seats to two or three rows behind the trailing edge — consistently louder than the front of the cabin, particularly on single-aisle aircraft. The galley zone affects rows immediately adjacent to the front and rear galleys: clattering equipment, crew conversation, and the periodic hiss of espresso machines all come through. The toilet zone is a subset of the rear galley area — the rows immediately in front of the rear lavatories on a narrow-body get both the galley noise and a steady stream of passengers standing directly beside them.
The quietest positions on a typical single-aisle aircraft are the first three or four rows of economy, directly behind the main cabin door bulkhead. Business-class noise levels do not generally carry back that far, and you are ahead of the engine. The seats are otherwise standard — no extra legroom compared with a random mid-cabin row — but for overnight flights where quiet matters, they are worth targeting. How to use a third-party seatmap properly
The key habit is to search by aircraft type, not just by route. Airlines regularly substitute aircraft — a 737-800 on a Tuesday, a 737 MAX 8 on a Thursday — and the seat layouts are different. SeatGuru and Aerolopa both let you search by aircraft variant. Aerolopa tends to be more current on recent configuration changes; SeatGuru has broader airline coverage.
The information worth checking specifically:
- Whether your row has full recline or is blocked.
- Whether your window seat actually has a window.
- Whether there's a galley, exit, or toilet partition directly behind or in front of your row.
- The seat pitch for the aircraft type — this is usually listed in the aircraft overview rather than on individual seats.
- Whether the seat is annotated with any known issues (broken IFE, reduced width, proximity to loud equipment).
The second habit is to check the seatmap again 48–72 hours before departure. Aircraft swaps are most common in that window — equipment changes after maintenance, unexpected capacity adjustments, or a planned substitution becoming confirmed. If your carrier allows free seat reselection, checking close to departure and moving if the aircraft has changed costs nothing except a few minutes. If it has changed to a less favourable layout, at least you know.

The practical checklist
Before confirming any seat selection on a flight over two hours:
- Look up the aircraft type from the booking confirmation or airline seat selection page.
- Search that aircraft variant on SeatGuru or Aerolopa.
- Check your selected seat for recline limitations, proximity to galleys and toilets, and window alignment.
- Note the seat pitch for the aircraft — compare it against your height and the flight duration.
- If you want quiet, check whether front-cabin economy rows are available rather than defaulting to middle or rear.
- Check again at 48 hours if the airline allows free seat changes.
None of this takes more than five minutes and it eliminates most of the “I didn't realise” surprises that make economy seats worse than they need to be. The information is all publicly available — the airline just isn't the one providing it.
Good to know
Seat maps change when airlines take delivery of new aircraft, update cabin configurations, or switch operating carriers on a codeshare route. A seatmap screenshot from last year may no longer reflect the current layout. Always check against the aircraft type shown on your booking, not against a cached result.
